Five Thoughts From Week 10 of NCAA Football
1. The Hurricanes can now move forward. After over two years of NCAA investigations and self imposed sanctions, the Miami Hurricanes found out that they won’t have any postseason bans and will only lose nine scholarships over the next three seasons. They will also be on probation. All in all, this is a huge win for the Canes because they can now put this scandal behind them and move on. Losing three scholarships per season isn’t a huge deal because the 82 (down from 85) scholarship players they’ll be able to carry on the team is more than the 78 scholarship players they have now anyway. They’ll also be able to recruit better knowing that teams around the country won’t be able to negatively recruit against them. Donna Shalala and Al Golden have to be happy with this outcome.
1. Student-athletes can stand up for themselves. The players from Grambling State deserve a lot of credit for standing up and protesting against the school’s lack of maintenance of the athletic complex and department as a whole. The team decided not to travel to Jackson, Mississippi for their game against Jackson State and wrote a letter citing issues with having to pay for Gatorade out of their own pockets, having to deal with mold and mildew on their equipment and the shoddy maintenance of their own athletic complex. They also included who they thought should be the replacement coach since Doug Williams was fired. it should be interesting how the school and athletic department chooses to handle this going forward. Its a shame because Grambling State comes from a great football tradition.
