In Feb 2013, Rowdy Ronda Rousey became the UFCs first ever womens champion. Her historic title reign is still going strong two years later, and after last night the queen of the bantamweights still remains atop her throne.
Former WWE superstar CM Punk meets with UFC commentator Joe Rogan to discuss his UFC debut coming in 2015.
Another weekend gone, and another UFC event in the books. Houston, TX was the host city for UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3. UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and Gray “The Bully” Maynard were supposed square off at UFC 130, but training camp injuries suffered by both fighters postponed the fight.
Before the fight, I had mixed feelings. I was hopeful that the fight would be the end of this fight trilogy. I was also dreading the possibility of this fight ending in a draw which happened on New Year’s Day (at UFC 125). Fate, as I would later realize, seemed intent on messing with me.
Round 1 played out eerily similar to Round 1 of the New Year’s bout. Maynard hounded Edgar around the octagon, and Edgar was doing everything he could just to survive. Amazingly, the champ withstood Maynard’s onslaught when the bell signaled the end of round 1.
Rounds 2 and 3 also mirrored what happened during the New Year’s bout. Edgar somehow got his second wind, and he brought the fight to Maynard. Edgar’s speed helped him establish his offense while it simultaneously stifled Maynard’s attacks.
As round 4 began, I couldn’t shake this feeling of déjà vu I had. I was sure the fight would end in a draw. Luckily for me, Edgar had other plans. He stunned Maynard with an uppercut, and then pinned Maynard against the cage. Edgar finished his opponent with some devastating ground and pound en route to a TKO victory.
UFC 136 also marked the return of Chael Sonnen. Sonnen dominated Brian Stann from start to finish. Sonnen ended the fight with an arm-triangle choke in round 2. After the fight, Sonnen requested a rematch with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva for Super Bowl weekend in a way only he could.
“Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck,” Sonnen said during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “Super Bowl weekend, the biggest rematch in the history of the business. I’m calling you out, Silva, but we’re upping the stakes. I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I’ll leave the UFC forever.”
