Five Thoughts: College Football 2015 – Week 2

1. Notre Dame may have won a battle, but will they win the war?
Last week against Texas, the Fighting Irish lost their starting running back, Tarean Folston, for the season to an injury. This week against Virginia, they lost their starting quarterback, Malik Zaire, for the season as well. They have some tough opponents going forward and it’ll be interesting to see how the Irish handle themselves with DeShone Kizer under center.

2. Michigan State has every right to be considered a top team.
All the top four teams played and defeated cupcake teams. Michigan State is the only team in the top five to beat a ranked team in the Oregon Ducks. If I’m Mark D’Antonio and the Spartans, I’m making a case that I should be within the top four, especially since the Spartans beat a legitimate playoff contender instead of some tomato can like Stephen F Austin or Lamar.

3. Get Auburn the hell out of here, please.
Come on now, guys. Are you serious with that performance against Jacksonville State? Don’t get me that any given Saturday stuff. You’re the 6th ranked team (maybe not for very long) in the country and you let Jacksonville State come into your house and take you to overtime? GET. OUT. OF. HERE.

4. Play to the whistle.
I’m not going to lie, I thought the Tennessee-Oklahoma game was over at halftime. Oklahoma couldn’t get the running game going and Baker Mayfield wasn’t playing well as the 17-3 score would indicate. But something happened to the Sooners and they had a 28 point second half including overtime. For a minute, it looked like Coach Stoops made a mistake picking Mayfield over Trevor Knight (and he still may have) but Mayfield pulled it together and got the win. Boomer Sooner.

5. Next week is a true test for the Hurricanes.
After outscoring their opponents a combined 89-20 over the past two weeks, the Hurricanes are set to play Nebraska at home. Bethune-Cookman and FAU are hardly championship contenders so going forward against the Cornhuskers and further into conference play the Canes are going to have to fix their issues up front on the line. One good thing to note is the fact that Al Golden and the team made great halftime adjustments and took care of business.

Bonus Thought #1
Its a shame to see Syracuse redshirt senior Terrell Hunt go down to injury. Personally, I watched him play in high school at Christ The King and saw him progress into the player he’s become. I know this isn’t the last we’ve seen from Hunt. He’s a resilient kid and will rebound from this.
