NY Giants & Jets Potential NFL Draft 2014 Picks

The NFL Draft is almost impossible to predict. GMs overvalue guys and underrate others, teams make trades that confound experts, and bad decisions are made every year. Here are some guys that Giants and Jets can look for in all 7 rounds.

1st round

The Giants select 12th and should look at Aaron Donald from Pittsburgh. He won a bunch of defensive awards this offseason and has all the talent in the world to be an impact player for the Giants. Perry Fewell might be looking at a head coaching job next offseason if Donald and the rest of this new look defense plays well.

The Jets have the 18th pick and could go a number of directions. They could look at offensive line but I think wide receiver depth is a more pressing matter. Odell Beckham Jr from LSU should be available to them here but if they want, trading down for Davante Adams or Kelvin Benjamin makes sense too.

2nd round

The Giants have the 43rd pick and if Texas Tech’s Jace Amaro is available, its a steal for them. They just signed Kellen Davis, who would be a huge target for Eli Manning. I also like Alabama’s Cyrus Kouandijo and Xavier Su’a Filo from UCLA. I won’t lie, I’m going to root for them to take Pierre Desir, so I can have my family name on a jersey finally.

The jets select 49th and should also look at a tight end like Amaro. I don’t think he’ll be available to them but UW’s Austin Seferian-Jenkins might be, as well as some of the wide receivers like Allen Robinson from Penn St and LSU’s Jarvis Landry. I also think Gabe Jackson is in play for the second round.

3rd round

The Giants have the 74th pick and at this point should be looking to add depth to their offensive line. I like what I’ve seen from Weston Richburg from Colorado St throughout the draft process. People are calling him the next Alex Mack and a potential starting center for years to come.

The Jets could look for a cornerback here with the 80th and they’ll have their pick among guys like Phillip Gaines from Rice and Stanley Jean-Baptiste from Nebraska. I also like Jordan Matthews from Vanderbilt. The guy is a playmaker.

4th round

The Giants have the 113th pick and defense will probably be the name of the game. There is talk that they covet UNC’s Kareem Martin at defensive end. Personally, I’d take a look at Craig Loston, the strong safety from LSU or Kevin Pierre-Louis, the outside linebacker from Boston College. You can never have too many guys on defense. I don’t expect Auburn’s Chris Davis or Loucheiz Purifoy from Florida to make it out of this round either.

The Jets will look to shine in the 4th round as they have the 104th, 115th and 137th picks. I like them grabbing Marcus Smith from Louisville. Having watched him beat up on my Hurricanes in the Russell Athletic Bowl, I know first hand what kind of damage he can do from the linebacker position. Their offensive line lacks depth so looking at Anthony Steen from Alabama wouldn’t be a bad idea. Finally, if they whiff on CJ2K, they could look at a running back like FSU’s Devonta Freeman or Lache Seastrunk from Baylor.

5th round

With two picks (152 and 174) in this round, the Giants will look at a running back at some point. I expect them to give Andre Williams from BC a look as well as Marion Grice from Arizona. There will be some solid defenders available to them like Aaron Lynch, the defensive end from South Florida, VaTech’s Antone Exum and Trevor Reilly, the linebacker out of Utah.

The Jets have the 154th pick and might want to look at Michael Sam. He had a better showing at his pro day than at the combine and he’ll be a contributor right away on special teams. Another guy they can look at is Matt Patchan, the tackle out of BC. They can’t be satisfied with their options at right tackle.

6th round

The Giants could add some solid depth in this round with the 187th pick. I really like Seantrel Henderson from Miami. He was a guy coming out of high school that scouts said could be the next great blind side tackle like Walter Jones. He had some issues off the field and didn’t play consistently but if he gets his act together, he’ll be a solid addition. I also like Colt Lyerla and Dri Archer.

Once again the Jets have a few picks to work with as they have the 195th, 209th, 210th and 213th picks. There are some good players this late in the draft that the Jets could look at. As well as the guys I mentioned above with the Giants, there’s Vinnie Sunseri from Alabama, Prince Shembo from Notre Dame, Xavier Grimble, the tight end from USC, Tre Boston, the safety from UNC and Ed Stinson, the defensive end from Alabama.

7th round

The Giants don’t have a 7th round pick.

The Jets have the 233rd pick and have to take Shaq Evans. The fact that he’s even here is crazy. He’s a good talent. There’s also Mike Campanaro, the wideout from Wake Forest, and Dede Lattimore, the linebacker from South Florida.
