College Basketball 2013-14: Who Fell And Who Prevailed in Week 4?

Numbers never lie, right? Well, not exactly when it comes to rankings.

Georgetown University ended their trip to San Juan on a fifth place game in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, defeating No. 10 VCU by four points.  D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera finished with 26 points and Markel Starks added 23 including 10 of 10 free throws. The final score was 84-80. Virginia Commonwealth not only lost to unranked Georgetown, they also lost their spot on the AP Top 25 for the week.

In another big upset, No. 24 UNC beat No. 3 Louisville in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. After UNC suffered a shocking loss to Belmont University earlier in the week, they redeemed themselves in the 93-84 victory on Sunday. Sophomore guard Marcus Paige led the Tarheels with 32 points. Forwards Brice Johnson and Kennedy Meeks contributed an additional 13 points each. Meeks also finished with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Louisville’s loss pushed them down to No. 9 on the AP Top 25 list, and UNC moved up to No. 16.

But the biggest shocker of the week was from the University of Massachusetts. They secured the No. 24 spot on the AP Top 25 list this week after their 6-0 season start with win’s over teams in the ACC, SEC and the Big Ten. According to the Associated Press, this is the first time the Minutemen have featured on the list since their coach, Derek Kellogg, played in 1998-1999.

Michigan State and Kansas were the top two teams on the list for the second week in a row.
