Five Thoughts: College Football 2013 – Week 4

1. Classy move by UCLA. On September 8th, Nick Pasquale, a wide receiver of the ULCA Bruins, was hit by a car and killed as he was walking in the early morning. Yesterday, his teammates honored their fallen brother by running their first play against New Mexico with only 10 players on the field. Shaquelle Evans had originally been in the huddle but then he was called off the field and Jordan James ran for four yards on the play.

2. Speaking of classy… Al Golden’s Miami Hurricanes were undressing the Savannah St Tigers through three quarters when the two coaches agreed to shorten the 4th quarter to 12 minutes and even then, Miami didn’t line up until there  was 10 seconds left on the play clock and only ran simple dive plays. Its a nice move when you see coaches try not to show anyone up. If only Ohio St and Louisville had gotten the same memo.
3. All Players United. In an unprecedented move, players from Georgia Tech, Georgia and Northwestern wore their gear with “APU” standing for All Players United written on them to protest the NCAA’s treatment of the played. According to Ramogi Huma, the president of the National College Players Association, this was a planned movement that will continue throughout the season. This is a big statement in the effort to gain some equality for college players.
4. Michigan looks mediocre again. The Wolverines have managed to stay undefeated yet again in a game where they didn’t look like they deserved to win. Devin Gardner continues to look like he doesn’t belong and turned the ball over three times against the UConn Huskies. Luckily for the Wolverines, Fitzgerald Toussaint had a very good game.
5. Notre Dame’s défense bails the Irish out yet again. Tommy Rees looked average against a very good Michigan St defense but it was the Irish defense that really stood late in the game. For some unknown reason, Mark Dantonio took out his starting quarterback Connor Cook in favor of Andrew Maxwell, who missed all three of his pass attempts.
