College Football Report – Stan’s Side Of The Story

After an exciting weekend in college football, I decided to take a look at some of the biggest games and stories and give you my side of it all. Don’t you feel special right now? You should.

Week 10 started off with a great match-up between No. 22 Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. On paper, this game wasn’t very important but it could have reshaped the landscape of the ACC going forward. It took a late kickoff returned for a touchdown by David Wilson to keep the Hokies’ ACC dreams alive.

In a game between No. 3 TCU and No. 5 Utah, the Horned Frogs completely dismantled Utah and held them to 7 points. TCU is now looking to make a case for a non-BCS school to play for a national championship.

We saw a number of upsets this past weekend starting with No. 10 LSU taking down No. 6 Alabama. It took a gutsy fourth down call by Les Miles in the fourth quarter for the Tigers to take the win. Alabama suffers their second loss of the season and their young defense proves once again that they’ve missed a lot of the players that moved on after last season.

Another huge upset was unranked Texas A&M taking down No. 8 Oklahoma. This marked the Aggies’ first win over a ranked team in three years and it was their first win over Oklahoma in the last seven attempts. The landscape of the Big 12 has shifted now with losses to Missouri and Texas. Nebraska and Oklahoma St appear to be the clear Big 12 giants with Nebraska being the early favorite.

The rankings in the top four hasn’t changed much with Oregon, Auburn, TCU and Boise St all leading the way. Utah falls to 15 and Alabama falls to 11, allowing for LSU to jump up to the No. 5 spot. Florida St, North Carolina St and Baylor all drop out of the top 25.

Other things from the weekend:

– Penn State coach Joe Paterno’s win made him the first D1 coach with 400 wins.

– The Miami Hurricanes beat the Maryland Terrapins, keeping their bowl chances alive as well as their chances in the ACC.

– In the Heisman race, Cam Newton continues to impress after Auburn’s win over Chattanooga but LaMichael James is right on his tail. Kellen Moore was the clear cut favorite coming into the season and has been putting up solid numbers but Newton and James have been nothing short of outstanding.

Some games I’m looking forward to in week 11:

– Miami @ Georgia Tech
– Kansas St @ No. 12 Missouri
– No. 5 Utah @ Notre Dame
– Penn St @ No. 11 Ohio St
– No. 19 Mississippi St @ No. 6 Alabama
