Kanye Stoops To New Low

For those of you who don’t know, Chicago’s very own Kanye West did an interview on Hot 97 recently with Angie Martinez , luckily for me I had an early work day and was able to listen in to some of the things he had to say. He discussed his new album, Jay-Z, who he feels are the hottest rappers out at the moment, but most importantly he discussed what he had been up to since the Taylor Swift incident. if you’ve been sleeping under a rock for the past year, during the MTV awards Kanye West rushed up on the stage while the young country singer was receiving an award for best music video, when a Hennessey driven Kanye West rushed the stage and told Swift that she did not deserve her award because Beyonce had the greatest video of all time, “Of All Time”.

But that’s not the most important point either, the part of the interview that inspired this blog, was when Kanye managed to put his foot directly in his mouth while on Live radio, when he said that the backlash from the Taylor Swift incident made him feel like a modern day Emmit Till. In an attempt to give a short history lesson, Emmit Till was a 14 year old African American boy who was tortured and brutally murdered for whistling at a white woman. Here is a bit more detail on what exactly happened to him.

“Till had been beaten and an eye gouged out, before he was shot through the head and thrown into the Tallahatchie River with a 70-pound cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire. His body was discovered and retrieved from the river three days later by two boys fishing”. Wikipedia.org

I’m sure I do not need to explain how what happened to Emmit Till was nowhere near close to what Kanye went through, to put it in its simplest form, after Kanye’s actions at the awards he probably went home and had sex with his girlfriend Angela Lola, Emmit Till never lived to see another day. Kanye’s actions forced him to be the Butt of some pretty lame jokes for about a month, but then something new popped up and we forgot all about him, Emmit Till, had a 70 pound Cotton Gin tied around his neck with barbed wire, and was thrown into the Tallahatchie River. There is no comparing the two situations or the back lash for either of them. At the end of Kanye’s career no one will remember this incident, Tills life ended years ago, and the people that killed him never served a second of jail time.

I understand that Kanye, was just expressing himself and probably didn’t mean the statement as literally as it came out to be, but this is just a comparison should not be made, it is in poor taste, and is disrespectful to the pain and suffering that the till family had to go through during their ordeal. Till was so badly mutilated that at his funeral, his face was completely mutilated. As someone that people look up to, he needs to think twice before he makes remarks of such reckless abandonment.

For those of you who feel sorry for Kanye, understand that what he did was his fault, and the reaction that he received was deserved. What kind of reaction did he expect when he ran on stage to interrupt someone from getting an award that they were receiving, especially when the person that you claimed should have won clearly did not agree with you. To make things worse, he was drinking the entire show, when drunken acts like a drunk he will be treated as such, did he expect to be praised and forgiven because he was going through so much?
