Five Thoughts: College Football 2015 – Week 7

1. Targeting calls are necessary but annoying.
I understand the point of these calls. Protecting players should be a premium. But my problem is that its difficult to discern targeting from a close play where a defender’s head and shoulders are down. I’ve seen too many times (including twice in one game for Miami) where a player gets ejected on a close call. I think its worth looking into it and maybe tweaking it.

2. Urban Meyer needs to grow a backbone.
If you listened to this week’s episode of Keeping It Real Sports, Claude and I talked about how even though Ohio State hasn’t looked all that impressive, they’ve still beaten teams by an average of 21 points. Sooner or later, the decision to keep playing Cardale Jones is going to bite Urban Meyer in the ass. Some things are more important than keeping the Gwinnett High School pipeline happy.

3. One of these undefeated teams has to lose.
Law of averages says we can’t finish the season with this many undefeated teams in the top 25. Its odd that there are this many teams without a loss so late into the season. I think this might be a result of teams (like TCU) being afraid of scheduling quality non conference opponents.

4. Christian Hackenberg is going to be alright.
His draft stock could be falling because he’s playing behind a porous offensive line and limited talent around him. Hopefully, if he does get drafted low, he can land in a good situation with a good team and learn behind a good starting quarterback. He’s got all the talent to succeed.

5. The game has passed the Ol’ Ball Coach by.
Steve Spurrier has been coaching for a long time. A really really long time. He’s forgotten more about football than a lot of us will ever know. But the game has passed him by. It probably started happening when he was with the Redskins. South Carolina rejuvenated him but its not enough. The game is different now. Its a little sad to see someone with such legendary status walk away from coaching on this level but if you gotta go, you gotta go.
