Prime Time Boxing

In a landmark agreement Al Haymon often regarded as the plague of modern day boxing has inked a deal that will bring premium boxing back to primetime television on NBC. The deal will bring big time boxing names to broadcast TV, names like Adrien Broner, and Danny Garcia. This is a departure from what Haymon has done in the past were he typically pit his A level fighters against what many thought were merely elite sparring partners.

This deal is huge and might be a shell game by Haymon to take eyes off Mayweather Pacquiao negotiations. Shell game or not this move is still significant. Perhaps a contributing factor is the need for networks to produce promising sports content that can draw eyes. While Broner is not a transcendent star just yet he will most definitely be able to attract viewers.

Another shocker is what NBC is bringing to the table. First these fights will air in March and April on Saturdays at 9PM and who will be the announcers? None other than Al Michaels the legend who does Saturday night football. Be ready for boxing fans to adjust to someone who is not Jim Lampley but if nothing else this shows that NBC is taking this venture serious as prior boxing matches had been solely regulated to the fledgling NBC sports network.

Hopefully this can catapult prize fighting back to more accessible television that does not require a subscription or a $75 pay per view buy. Many will be watching in the boxing community to see if the sport can garner high ratings significant advertising dollars.
