Five Thoughts: College Football 2013 – Week 14

1. When you think its over, its not. If you watched this years installment of the Iron Bowl, you thought Alabama had won and would cruise to their third straight national title game. But late in the fourth quarter, Auburn managed to pull yet another rabbit out of their hats and got the win with no time left on the clock. While I think its still possible for Alabama to get back into the national title race, I don’t think they will. I also think we’ll still see an SEC school in the title game. To be honest, I feel bad for the rest of the country because Nick Saban has been looking for something to motivate his guys and this is exactly the fuel he’ll use to go on another epic winning streak. I also think its abhorrent for anyone to send death threats to the Bama kicker, Cade Foster for missing three field goals. I get it, had he hit the field goals, the Crimson Tide aren’t in the position they were in, but lets not forget this is a 22 year old kid playing a game.

2. Urban Meyer should know better. I don’t want to hear about how unfair it is that Ohio St is on the outside looking in, even if they don’t move up in the rankings. When he was the head coach at Florida, he knew as well as anyone else that the strength of schedule in the SEC was better than any other conference. As impressive as his 23 game winning streak at Ohio St has been, would his Buckeyes still be undefeated in the SEC? Why shouldn’t a one loss SEC school be given the benefit of the doubt when its loss came against a good team. Why should Ohio St be praised for beating up on a weak conference? Meyer wasn’t complaining when he was in Gainsville and had the SEC backing him up.

3. Rivalry week lived up to the hype. What a great week of football. We saw Auburn shatter a dynasty in the making, Ohio St barely surviving against Michigan, Stanford taking out Notre Dame and Oregon winning over Oregon St. If you weren’t a college football fan before this week, you’re just not paying attention.

4. Kudos to the kids in Durham. For the first time in school history, Duke has won 10 games, the ACC title and will appear in the ACC championship game against the heavily favored Florida State Seminoles. While I fully expect Jameis Winston and the Noles to take care of business, this Duke team has done an incredible job and David Cutcliffe will be garnering a lot of attention this offseason.

5. What if…? Recruiting is a key part of the game and a lot of the country’s top players almost didn’t end up where they did. What if Jameis Winston had signed with Alabama instead of Florida State? Maybe Miami is in a better position than they’re in now, especially if Teddy Bridgewater signs with Miami instead of Louisville. Food for thought.
