Five Thoughts: College Football 2013 – Week 2

Here are Stan Talouis’ thoughts after an exciting week 2 of College Football…

1. Jadeveon Clowney and South Carolina might be overrated. With all the hype surrounding Clowney and his quest to become the first exclusively defensive player to win the Heisman trophy, I think people were expecting him to come out and average 2 sacks a game. With two games (and one loss) in the books, Clowney only has one sack on the season. The Gamecocks can still be a threat in the SEC but they won’t if they give up 41 points to Georgia.

2. Aaron Murray can win the big games. Well, he’s won A big game. Beating a good South Carolina team is the first of many wins he’ll have to have in order to prove he can carry his team to an SEC championship. He’s got a few more tests between now and January.
3. LSU might be the best team in the country. I respect teams like Alabama, Oregon and Ohio St but Cam Cameron might be the best thing to happen to Zac Mettenberg since his commitment to LSU. The offense is clicking, the defense is stout and they’re already in midseason form. I fully expect another LSU-Bama war and the winner will likely be playing for the national championship.
4. USC isn’t very good. Lane Kiffin continues to screw things up in Southern Cal after a loss to Washington St…at home. I’ll give USC’s defense credit. Outside of a pick-six from Max Wittek, the only points the Cougars scored was a field goal late in the fourth quarter. What has angered most Trojan fans and lead them to boo and chant “Fire Kiffin!” is the lack of offense on a team that has a solid running game and quite possibly the best wide receiver in the country in Marquise Lee.
5. Maybe its time for Mack Brown to step down. Texas hasn’t exactly been the powerhouse they once where when Vince Young was under center…or in shotgun at least. The 15th ranked Longhorns were destroyed on the ground by Taysom Hill and the BYU running game. It looked like they had never seen or even heard of the read option before. Texas is 1-1 and there’s plenty of football to play this season so they could always turn it around and win the Big 12 but if they show up (or don’t show up) the way they did against BYU, its going to be a long season. I recently met a dude in Las Vegas that was a big Longhorns fan and I told him that his team was going to struggle defensively and he didn’t believe me. My friend, if you’re reading this…I told you so.
Oh and by the way. Go Canes.
