The Ike Era Has Begun

Six years ago, there was a buzz at Shea stadium,  the Mets after years of trying to keep up with the spending spree’s of the Yankee’s and Red Sox, focused on home grown talent Met fans were looking for a player that they could dub the face of the franchise, they soon got their wish because in the summer of 2004 the David Wright era began. He was everything a struggling franchise could ask for, and six years later he stands as the most stabilizing part of the Mets.

But Wright had his moment in the sun,  and this summer a player who also plays a corner position in the infield, is entering the majors with the same kind of buzz that Wright had. His name is Ike Davis; standing at 6’4 and weighing 215 pounds, he is the first baseman of the future for the New York Mets, it just so happened that with the injury to Daniel Murphy and the demotion of Mike Jacobs the what was once assumed to be a mid season call up has now turned into an early entrance into the MLB, and so far the results have been pretty good.

After batting 392 with 2 homers, and 4 RBI in the minors, he has started off his major league career hitting for a scorching 350, batting average, 1 homer, and 2 RBI’s through six games. Its safe to say that the Mets are very excited about his skills so far. But he’s still only six games into his mlb career.  If he stays with the Mets for the rest of the season, his superior defensive skills and contact hitting approach may help him, but it is only a matter of time before pitchers begin to find his weaknesses, and when that happens, we will see if this rookie is ready for the big apple spotlight, or if he needs more seasoning in the minors. But until then Met fans can celebrate the Ike era.
