The pain and agony of an incarcerated pregnant mother that has to go through the humiliation of being in chains from the risk to the belly to the ankles as she prepares to give birth to a life that has nothing to do with the lack of respect of how the authority handles the pregnant prisoners. Why should women that are incarcerated that are pregnant should get the most disrespect going through a pregnancy; It’s bad enough that they’re caved in cages like animals, standing on hard cold floors in a isolated prison’s walls. Okay, they did the crime so they have to do the time, that doesn’t take away from them being human beings God’s greatest gift on earth. Is it fair that they should have to suffer knowing that they have another life that has nothing to do with what is going on to suffer as well? Is it fair that the unborn child is in jail for a crime that he or she hasn’t committed- the only innocent thing about them is that their lying in a mother womb on the inside with nothing but love and comfort, but dealing with a devilish system that just don’t care about the unborn child’s well being, that doesn’t care about the health and the livelihood of what a pregnant mother has to go through. Hasn’t that unborn child suffered enough?
There are a total of six states that banned regulating the use of restraints on pregnant women. The sixth are California, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, Texas and Vermont. The State prisons around the country that jailed women are routinely shackled during child birth, often time by the correctional staff without medical training, according to the civil rights organizations and prisoners advocates http://www.msnbsc.msn.com/id/32554695/. Quoted from an article from MSNBC.com “N.Y nears ban on shackling pregnant inmates” a former inmate that was in a NY state prison while being pregnant by the name Venita Pickney, she has stated that she had “chain wrapped around her swollen abdomen. Her ankles and hands were shackled”. In most prisons the use of restraints for pregnant inmates was “procedure”.
Webster’s dictionary defines the word Shackles as something which confines the legs or arms so as to prevent their free motion. Pregnancy’s definition from the Webster dictionary is defined as containing a developing embryo, fetus, or unborn offspring within the body. Now Shackles plus Pregnancy equals malice. The reason for that being the answer is since the prisons across America wants to shackle the pregnant inmates on their way to the hospital especially strapped them around their belly how so insensitive that is the last thing quoted from Governor Patterson of NY stated that “A woman giving birth to a child is hardly the first person that is going to be thinking of trying to escape or create any kind of problem”.
Abuse of power in the system Versus humanity: Even though the prisons across the country have a protocol to follow within their facility, does it give them the right to manhandle a pregnant women the way they handle the ones that’s not pregnant; does it give them the right to chain a women given birth with both arms and both ankles strapped to the hospital bed in the delivery while she is given birth, that’s sounds like torture. When a women is feeling like vomiting while she is sitting in the van driven by correction officer of the state prison and they want allow her to get out because the guard isn’t allowed to roads because the pregnant women
